Lallemand Oenology, South Africa in collaboration with the South African Society for Enology and Viticulture, sponsor the annual prizes for the best Oenology students at Stellenbosch University and also Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute.
These prizes were handed to the winners at a recent SASEV congress, Stellenbosch.
Kalissa de Kok was the top of her class at the Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute for 2022 and Suzaan Krige the top student at the Viticulture and Oenology Department of the University of Stellenbosch.
Kalissa, originally from South Africa, but grew up and matriculated in Dubai, UAE. She attended Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, to study Business Sustainability. She soon fell in love with wine and chemistry and enrolled at Elsenburg Agricultural College. After her studies she started her winemaking career within South Africa and spend some time at various wineries. She finished the 2023 vintage at Hermanuspietersfontein Winery in the Hermanus area.
Suzaan, a native from Stellenbosch, matriculated from Hoër Meisieskool, Bloemhof. Soon after, she started her studies at Stellenbosch University and obtained her BCom Management Accounting degree. Coming from a winemaking family, she decided to also pursue wine studies and successfully obtained her BSc Agric degree at the end of 2021. She spends some at the family winery, Kanonkop, and in 2022 joined Cederberg winery. For the past vintage 2023, she joined the De Grendel winery team.
