2015 Lallemand Bursary

The Institute of Masters of Wine and Lallemand are delighted to announce that Daniela Shelton, from London, has won the 2015 Lallemand Bursary.

The bursary, established in 2010, is open to students in the Institute’s study programme and this year provides a fully-funded place to attend a Lallemand seminar in Lisbon, Portugal, this July. The seminar will focus on wine fermentation and how it can shape the wine profile.

Daniela said: “I am absolutely thrilled to receive this Lallemand Bursary. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to talk to some of the most influential wine making consultants and viticulture scientists in the business, such as Sam Harrop MW and Dr Bruno Blondin. I am particularly looking forward to sharing thoughts on some of today’s hottest topics such as lower alcohol wines, a market perspective of wine faults and the natural wine movement, all of which will be invaluable for my future MW studies.”

Daniela secured the bursary with a 1,000-word essay on the following topic: Should the use of selected microorganisms for alcoholic or malolactic fermentation be considered as additives in wines and why (if yes or no)?

Daniela is a London-based wine consultant who is actively voicing her views about wine and food through social media and her blog. Born in the Czech Republic, she took a degree in Psychology and Linguistics at the University of Surrey, before finding her true calling in wine, first at Oddbins and then Ehrmanns, the London-based importer. She has worked as a winemaking harvest intern at Niepoort, Douro Valley and also at wineries in Hermanus and Franschhoek, South Africa. She subsequently spent time as a consultant with Robert Joseph, the award winning wine critic. In 2014, she won the AXA Millesimes scholarship followed by the Champagne scholarship in 2015, sponsored by The French Wine Society.

Lallemand, the bursary’s sponsor, is a Supporter of the Institute and a leading producer of wine yeast, bacteria and their nutrients, and a distributor of oenological enzymes. It is a privately owned Canadian corporation present in most wine producing countries. Its Oenology Division, based in Toulouse, France, has a major focus on research and development, both in-house and in collaboration with renowned research institutes.

Ann Dumont, Communications Manager for Lallemand’s Oenology Division, said: “Daniela’s essay on wine additives was very original and creative.  The essay was well-researched and well-written, a testament to the quality of future MWs.  Lallemand Oenology is proud to support students like Daniela and the Institute of Masters of Wine.”

Penny Richards, Executive Director of the Institute said: “We are delighted for Daniela, and grateful to Lallemand for its continuing support in providing this bursary.  We know the students in the Institute’s study programme are always keen to compete for this opportunity, and we know that the seminar in Lisbon will be a helpful way of expanding Daniela’s knowledge even further, while at the same time giving her the opportunity to spend time with some of the Master of Wine speakers, and other leaders in their field.”
